Before You Start

Before operating your lawnmower, it is essential that you have read and understood the instruction manual supplied with your machine.

Failure to follow the manufacturer's instructions may result in:

  • Damage to the machine
  • Personal injury
  • Invalidating your warranty

Always ensure you:

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Operate the machine in a safe environment
  • Keep bystanders, children, and pets away from the work area
  • Handle petrol carefully, as it is highly flammable

Starting Your Petrol Lawnmower

Step 1 – Check the Engine Oil

Ensure the engine contains the correct amount of oil.

Check the oil level using the dipstick and confirm it is between the minimum and maximum markings.

For most petrol lawnmowers, SAE 30 oil (or an equivalent 30-weight engine oil) is recommended. Always refer to your product manual for the correct specification.

Step 2 – Check the Fuel Level

Ensure there is sufficient petrol in the fuel tank.

For best performance, use fresh unleaded petrol that is no more than 30 days old.

Step 3 – Prime the Engine (If Fitted)

If your lawnmower is equipped with a primer bulb:

  1. Press the primer bulb 3 to 4 times.

This helps draw fuel into the carburettor and aids starting.

Note: If your lawnmower does not have a primer bulb, proceed to the next step.

Step 4 – Position the Starter Cord

Gently pull the starter cord and place it into the rope guide located on the lawnmower handle.

The starter handle should rest securely within the guide.

Step 5 – Start the Engine

  1. Pull and hold the engine brake/start-stop lever against the handle.
  2. Pull the starter cord sharply and smoothly.
  3. Repeat if necessary until the engine starts.

Some engines may require several pulls, particularly when starting from cold.

Once the engine starts, continue holding the engine brake/start-stop lever during operation.

Checking the Start Cable Tension

A loose cable can prevent the engine brake mechanism from engaging correctly, making the engine difficult or impossible to start.

Tools Required

  • 10 mm spanner
  • 13 mm spanner

Identifying a Loose Cable

Inspect the cable adjustment point on the handle assembly.

If there is excessive slack in the cable, adjustment may be required.

Adjusting the Cable

  1. Locate the cable adjustment bolt.
  2. Loosen the locking nut using the appropriate spanners.
  3. Adjust the cable tension until the slack is removed.
  4. Retighten the locking nut securely.

The cable should be adjusted so that it engages correctly when the engine brake/start-stop lever is pulled.

Visual Guidance

Please refer to the accompanying videos and images for a detailed demonstration of the cable adjustment procedure.

The adjusted cable position should sit approximately midway along the threaded adjustment bolt, as shown in the reference image.
